This is a beautifully produced book with a distinctive visual style that originated as lithographic prints. The limited colour palette and surreal nature-creatures call to mind Tove Jansson’s Toffel, the minor Moomin mate who went on to inspire stand-alone titles: high praise indeed.

An Áit a nEitlíonn na Madaí Crainn is a contemplative, dreamy picture book that celebrates the connection between man and nature. There is rhyme and rhythm in the small verses that move the story forward. They have a poetic flavour and are almost like a poem or song when read together. The voice of Lus na mBan Sí is heard throughout the book as she advises the young girl and reminds her of the wonders of nature. This is a book for children, but it is one that would also suit adults because of the beauty of the book itself and the encouragement for reflection contained within. It is a beautiful picture book, but you could also call it a mantra or a meditative poem that gives the reader a break from the mind and celebrates the simple beauty of nature.

A gentle imaginative book in rich Ulster Irish… a beautiful, magical picture book
